Most Guttenberg Cops Making Six Figures

Why is the tiniest town in all of New Jersey, with virtually no crime, paying most of its police force over $100,000 a year?

    • Not really: Well with that said, what is a police officer worth? Additionally, the articles argument is lopsided unless you compare populations. While Guttenberg is small in size, the population is high in number.

According to The United States Census Bureau, Guttenberg has a population of 11,429 residents. So, you have 25 sworn officers policing 11,429 residents, and that does not include visitors that travel through the township. Looking at other municipalities such as Fairview with 14237 residents, ridgefield park 12925, secuacus 18311 the number of citizens is comparable to Guttenberg despite its size. Additionally, these other police agency’s have more sworn LEO’s then Guttenberg so you can even say Guttenberg does more with less.

    • The cia protects the president and salary capped 74k in 2012…these cops patrol a whole 1/4 of a mile, and get paid more….
That’s hitting the lottery…they don’t even have a highschool in that town..

  1. It has nothing to do with Guttenberg but to do with how much LEO make. You need to remain competitive with salaries in order to recruit. It certainly sucks for Guttenberg since their budget might not be lucrative than its resident Townships.

    • The people of each municipality determine how much their officers are paid. The people elect the town mayor, council, etc., and they negotiate the salary contract. As citizens , if you are concerned about salaries, get involved with your town government.

  2. You’re kidding, right? Its the most densely populated municipality in the entire country. The size is small, but there is a lot to look after. They serve graciously and proud they are my police officers. Stop fishing for stupid stories.

    • UC, WNY, and Hoboken are 2, 3, and 4 respectively on that list and those cops don’t make that much and have a larger area to protect, with more crime, and more people. The only reason Guttenberg is so densely populated is because it was designed to be 3-4 blocks long. 6-figure salary for an area smaller than some parks seems a bit over the top.

  3. I’m disgusted by this video, however I thank God everyday the man I love proudly protected this municipality until the opportunity to Protect and Serve his own hometown presented itself. #myherowearskevlar

  4. Three shifts, seven days a week, 365 days, how is 25 alot ? 100k in NJ ? 10 percent in pension, 30 percent federal tax, state tax, 900 a month medical…can this reporter do simple math ?

  5. And they ALWAYS park in the NO PARKING Fire Lane even when all the actual parking spots are free! The extra two feet is too far to walk? Safety isn’t a concern? You need to be RIGHT in front of the door to the mall? Holy Entitlement.

  6. I had the pleasure of working with and getting to know personally members of the Gutenberg PD. This is a fine group of officers and the people of Gutenberg should rest easy knowing their PD is on the job.

Not only do they handle their own town, they also assist North Bergen and WestNew York Police as necessary and were always there for me as
back up officers. Do not fall for the nonsense spewed by this fellow Dixon. Small geographically does not always translate to small in law enforcement responsibilities. Hudson County officers have always been underpaid, and this group is worth every penny. Dixon should stick to practicing law.

  7. Good for them. Between dealing with the snobs that live in the galaxy that think they live in Beverly Hills, the drunks on bergenline and everyone other idiot in that town.

How much of that 100k comes from jobs that outside companies (pseg, water and other private contractors) ?

  8. No cop should be making six figures they don’t do shit but gave us hard working ppl a hard time they sit on there ass all day or go hone to chill smoke some weed and do there personal shit on our tax dollars

  9. What should the pay be for putting your life on the line? Because the town is small does that mean they have less crime or less incidents of violence? Their population is bigger than many cities 10 times the size, must be a slow news day

  10. What they need to do is have a mandatory physical every year to stay qualified as a cop, just yest I saw about 7 over weight cops in Guttenberg ,what are they gonna chase donuts? This should be mandatory state wide, I don’t want my life in the hands of a cop who can barely get out of there patrol vehicle

  11. All Hudson county municipal salaries are great ….. leaves one impressed a lot …… but put in the work 6 figures takes years not just magically a 5 year career 20-25 close to 30 years and ranks too matter above all else

  12. Not hating but they should give that kind of pay to officers that do risk their lives for real.not saving a cat from the sewer or write report on broken car window. Or give out ticket for not wearing seatbelt. Bayonne is more dangerous then that town and bayonne is a sweet place

  13. Police officers all over this country deserve to make a good living, whether it’s Newark, New York City or Guttenberg. These officers protect and serve at least a few thousand residents of the town. They also assist border towns like North Bergen and West New York. To the people whom criticize officers for making a decent wage, my advice to you is to become a law enforcement officer so that you can also make a six figure salary. But keep in mind, there will be many holidays, weekends, and midnight shifts that you will be working while your friends and family sleep soundly in their beds. Oh yes, and there is always a chance that you’ll be shot, stabbed, assaulted, and ridiculed for simply doing your job. So, by all means go ahead and become a cop if it is so good and pays so well. And if these realities do not appeal to you, then I suggest you all should refrain from commenting. A one hundred thousand dollar a year salary for the risk involved is not all that much. Think about it.

    • If that’s your argument Anthony, why not pay all the over night workers at a gas station or a 24 hour convenience store or dinner employees who work holidays weekends or travel to other locations when needed, while everyone is asleep in their beds are just as likely to get shot or robbed and killed without a gun or protectice gear that police are afforded while making 1/10th the salary..Sorry but most officers with overtime and other commissions they make while ruining lives are far closer to 200k per year..

    • Bruce, your point would be valid if I were of the opinion that the people you describe above should not be making a decent wage… but I’m not. The article posted was specific to Guttenberg police officers. If it were about cab drivers or gas station attendants earning good pay I’d probably support them too. I have two questions for you… Are you really trying to compare the work that a gas station attendant performs to that of a police officer? In your opinion what is a reasonable wage for a police officer in these times?

    • Anthony, I don’t wanna be rude, you’re right I agree with you, but it’s that Bruce and I know each other, and we both grew up with a lot of people who became police officers. They are our friends and we care for them, but we know them personally, we know a lot about them and about what they do on a daily basis, and I have to tell we’re a bit appalled. I myself am in fkn dismay after what I’ve seen and I don’t think they deserve to be paid that amount in any municipality in Hudson county. I worked side by side with police officers for four years I was employed by the county. I was so disgusted by all the dishonorable things I saw that it made me join the dark side. There’s a lot of law breaking going on, and the worst part is that there really is good law enforcement officials out there who deserve such a pay, but it’s not the majority, it’s very few. It’s also very sad that those few good cops have to remain silent because they actually fear the mafia-like psychopaths they work with side by side

    • Elvis, you were not rude at all. However, I must strongly disagree. How can you make a comment like the majority of police officers are dishonorable, “law breaking” individuals? C’mon, based on how you write, you must be an educated man; you can’t possibly believe that most cops are bad. And how can a person say the majority unless you’ve met every officer in the country, the state, and Hudson County? Unfortunately the few officers you know may be corrupt or dishonorable in some way, but that should not reflect on the profession as a whole. Think about it.

    • Anthony Lorenzo Scalcione am I comparing a police officers work to the aforementioned, I don’t think either or is less important. What I can tell you is that there should be a max cap implemented on your wages..I know several police officers from Guttenberg 2 being from Union City.I propose you let the citizens conceal carry and reduce the current police state and let the citizens protect themselves..I have to agree with Elvis Sancho, most cops don’t hold themselves to professional standards with the public but rather abuse their position of authority.I think the current system is designed to generate money than rather serve in the publics best interest with all do respect..Just my opinion..

    • And I agree with you on letting law abiding citizens carry. Unfortunately in our “blue state” led by Democrats, that is a hard one to pass. Regarding the usage of the word majority- imagine if you used those words describing entire races of people… It would be unacceptable. I think the same standard should be applied to people in law enforcement. Try and be objective.

    • Excuse me, I meant the majority I worked with, there was a lot of unnecessary violence. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I like to know other people’s opinions, it helps me learn. You’re a smart guy

  14. Guttenberg is the most densely populated town in the US!! We have more than 13k residents. The officers are hard working and deserve every penny. Why not report about reporters misleading the public!!

  15. The the town agreed to the package, they did a great job negotiating a good deal, they work in all elements, , crazy people wife beaters, listen to raise a family pay a mortgage, sent kid to college, that fair pay.

  16. Well with that said, what is a police officer worth in your opinion? Additionally, your argument is lopsided unless you compare populations. While Guttenberg is small in size, the population is high in number.

According to The United States Census Bureau (2013), Guttenberg has a population of 11,429 residents. • Additionally due to the skills they must possess: fitness, writing skills, legal knowledge, firearms training, correctional officer training, social work knowledge, constitutional scholar, and so forth. Basically you have a lawyer/prosecutor of multiple disciplines that has a gun, self defense training, and is constantly tasked to address various issues.

  17. Having 25 brave men and women who protect our great town are entitled to a fair salary that has grown over their years of service. Having a population of 13 K and only a police department 25 shows the dedication these officers have.

    • That data complied includes those that are underemployed, low skill workers, and every economic bracket. That is not a fair measurement of value.

However, you tell me what are they worth based on the skills they must possess: fitness, writing skills, legal knowledge, firearms training, correctional officer training, protection services, social work knowledge, constitutional scholar, and so forth. Basically you have a lawyer/prosecutor of multiple disciplines that has a gun, self defense training, and is constantly tasked to address various issues.

      • Like any other job there are those that go above and beyond, but you forget some of these cops we went to high school with and we know what they are and are not capable of. Constitutional scholar? You are hilarious.

    • So your argument is: despite the multiple skills a police officer must possess, he/she should make no more than the median income? Additionally, if that’s the case my question to you is where is the incentive for people to pursue law enforcement as a career path?
Take into consideration the multiple skills a police officer must possess, and the training/knowledge required.

    • Thomas Guaschino : No, I’m not a socialist. My opinion is that NJ is a good example of what a LEO’s compensation should be. However, there are multiple factors that can raise or lower pay. Example, in some town in the US a LEO is a part time position. You cannot compare that to a full time LEO.

In the end, a fair bargaining agreement should be made between the respective union, and the municipality which should set the pay scale.

    • Eric Crafton again .. I never said police shouldn’t make good money … to have the majority of the department making over 100 grand in a town like Guttenberg sounds a bit much .. my family has been here since the 70s by the way ..
