North Bergen High School Dominates State Top 50 – In Highest Paid Teachers

0
You’d never know it from the test scores, but seven of the 50 highest paid public school teachers in the entire state of New Jersey are teaching in one town in Hudson County.
HudsonTV reviewed records from the state’s Department of Education for the 2016-17 school year that just ended, to determine that one school, North Bergen High School, has the fifth-highest paid teacher statewide, four of the top 27 and six of the 50-highest-paid teachers anywhere in the state. Meanwhile, a North Bergen grade-school teacher ranks 10th statewide.
We found that of the top 300 highest-paid teachers in public schools in the state (according to state records), just 32 teach here in Hudson County.  While lower on the list, 12 teachers in the Hudson County Vocational School District show up among the top 300, teaching at the County Prep High School or High Tech High School.
If we move lower in the rankings, which often means a difference of just hundreds of dollars, we start to see some (but not all) other cities and towns represented.
Jersey City’s highest paid teacher makes over $120,000, but only three of its teachers crack the top 300. It has 52 other teachers, however, in the top 1,000 highest paid.
Union City’s highest paid teacher ranks 39th statewide at $127,930, but that’s the only Union City teacher in the top 300 we found. However, it has 51 other teachers in the top 1,000.
West New York’s highest paid teacher ranks 275th, and has 20 teachers in the top 1,000. Secaucus’ highest ranked teacher ranks 264th and leads a pack of 17 in the top 1,000.
By comparison, North Bergen, overly represented at the very top, has only 16 teachers in the top 1,000.
And at the south part of the county, Bayonne, Hoboken and Kearny each have only one teacher among the top 1,000 highest paid.
HudsonTV’s investigations continue.
