Several North Jersey Officials endorse Phil Murphy for Governor

Former Ambassador and Goldman Sachs Executive Phil Murphy became the presumptive Democratic nominee for Governor Thursday after a whirlwind day of endorsements capped off by an appearance at North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco’s annual gala in Garfield, and leading contender Steve Sweeney’s decision earlier Thursday not to seek the nomination.

The withdrawals of Sweeney and Jersey City mayor Steve Fulop give the self financing Murphy the inside track to the nomination and he has the announced support of most Northern New Jersey Democratic county organizations.

Murphy, addressing over one thousand attendees, said he was honored by the North Bergen contingent and extolled the town for its middle class “quality of life.”

The evening event also featured Assembly speaker Vincent Prieto announcing Hudson Democrats were “united” behind Murphy, just hours after Steve Fulop came to the early bird cocktails and a week after he endorsed Murphy and dropping out of the running.

The only mention of the presidential race came from Bergen Democratic Chairman Lou Stellato, who called Donald Trump “incurable” while praising the credentials of Hillary

Clinton.
