Ricky Rivera shot in Officer-Involved Shooting in Weehawken

Hoboken, NJ – The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit has charged Ricky Rivera, a 20-year-old man from Paterson, in relation to the officer-involved shooting incident that occurred in Weehawken on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

According to the authorities, at approximately 5 a.m., officers from the Weehawken Police Department were conducting patrols in a neighborhood that had experienced a series of auto thefts. During their patrol, officers noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in a driveway on Regency Place. As they approached the vehicle, Rivera, the male occupant, fled the scene in the vehicle, striking one officer who was on foot. In response, another officer discharged his weapon.

Despite being injured, Rivera continued driving the stolen vehicle and collided with an occupied Port Authority Police Department vehicle shortly after. Eventually, Rivera came to a stop, and it was discovered that he had sustained an apparent gunshot wound. He was promptly taken to Jersey City Medical Center for medical treatment, and fortunately, his injuries were not life-threatening. The officer struck by the fleeing vehicle also received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that the vehicle Rivera was operating had been reported stolen from West New York on Friday, July 29, 2023.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit has charged Rivera with the following offenses:

  • Aggravated Assault (Attempt to Cause Serious Bodily Injury)
  • Eluding
  • Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (vehicle)
  • Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (vehicle)
  • Receiving Stolen Property (vehicle)

Rivera is currently being detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
