Founded in 1973 by H. Mickey McCabe, Bayonne’s McCabe Ambulance is mourning its leader’s passing.  According to its website, McCabe began as a household operation with a single ambulance and family members answering calls at all hours of the day and night. Since that time, McCabe Ambulance has developed onto one of the most reputable and professional operations in the state of New Jersey.

H. Mickey McCabe passed away on Monday.

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis posted this statement on Facebook after learning of McCabe’s passing:

“I’m just hearing the news that Bayonne legend, Mickey McCabe has sadly passed away. H. Mickey McCabe started McCabe Ambulance Service in Bayonne in 1973 and for fifty years has been an absolute icon in our community.
Through Mickey’s leadership, McCabe Ambulance not only served the residents of Bayonne, but was also a leader in the Emergency Medical Field throughout the region. They are an integral part of the Emergency Management field in Hudson County, and they have responded to every major event in our area over the last several decades, including both World Trade Center attacks, Secaucus and Hoboken Train Derailments, US Airways Flight 1549, and many others. Mickey was also a member of many boards and organizations within our city, as he was always committed to making Bayonne a better place.
I’m having a hard time envisioning our city without this pillar. His loss will felt for a long time, but I’m sure Mickey would want us to lift our chins and keep working on this beautiful community. Mickey was, and will continue to be, a member of our Bayonne family!
On behalf of our entire city, I want to express my deepest condolences to Judy, Michael, Allison, and all six grandchildren as you endure this loss. I assure you all, our entire city grieves with you. Rest in Peace good friend!”
Its website continues, “On average, McCabe now answers more than 25,000 calls per year, including 9-1-1 for the City of Bayonne, backup 9-1-1 for the City of Hoboken, 9-1-1 call screening for both municipalities, mutual aid for neighboring communities in Hudson County, and emergency response to the New Jersey Turnpike and Bayonne Bridge. The McCabe Communications Center is accredited by the State of NJ as a Public Safety Dispatch Point and coordinates all responses. EMTs cross-trained as Emergency Medical Dispatchers serve as the point of contact for 9-1-1 and facility callers, dispatching appropriate resources and providing pre-arrival instructions during medical emergencies.”
The Bayonne Fire Canteen posted the following message on Facebook:
“Everyone from The BFC would like to send their deepest remorse to the loss of H. Mickey.  If you happen to run into a McCabe ambulance crew please offer your condolences. I know they are hurting. Mickey was a great boss and cared for his employees deeply. He also cared for the citizens of Bayonne deeply, providing nationally recognized, top EMS service to the city of Bayonne since the 70’s. His legacy will live on by the crews who will continue to answer our calls for help for years to come.”
