Hoboken Police Launch "Drive Smart, Walk Smart" Campaign with $30,000 Grant

The Hoboken Police Department is taking proactive steps to enhance pedestrian safety in the city through a new campaign funded by a $30,000 grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

Dubbed the “Drive Smart and Walk Smart” initiative, the program aims to raise public awareness of safe driving and pedestrian habits while cracking down on dangerous behaviors on the road. The campaign will run through September and will utilize a combination of enforcement and education strategies.

As part of the enforcement efforts, officers will be targeting motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, as well as those engaged in distracted driving, careless driving, and seat belt violations. Offenders will receive warnings and possibly summonses, with a portion of the fines collected going toward the New Jersey Pedestrian Safety Enforcement and Education Fund.

The educational component of the program will involve public presentations aimed at educating some of Hoboken’s most vulnerable pedestrians, including children and senior citizens. These presentations will be conducted by members of the police department’s School Unit and Traffic and Transportation Unit over the coming months.
