Robinson, a Vineyard resident and former student at Utah Valley University (UVU), was turned in by a family member—reportedly his father, a retired deputy sheriff—after confessing to the killing, according to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox.
The governor described the arrest as a potential “watershed moment” in American history, urging the nation to reject political violence amid a surge of online vitriol following the slaying.
The assassination unfolded Wednesday evening at a Turning Point USA event on UVU’s campus in Orem, where Kirk, 31, was fielding audience questions before a crowd of about 3,000.
Video footage captured a heated exchange between Kirk and a young questioner—later identified as Robinson—over mass shootings and transgender issues, moments before a single sniper shot rang out from a rooftop across the quad, striking Kirk in the chest.
Kirk collapsed onstage, and the shooter fled into nearby woods, evading capture for over 36 hours despite a massive search involving drones, K-9 units, and tips from more than 7,000 public leads.
President Donald Trump, speaking to Fox News just minutes before the official announcement, revealed he had been briefed on the breakthrough, stating with “a high degree of certainty” that “we have him in custody.”
Trump, who credited Kirk with pivotal get-out-the-vote efforts in his 2024 reelection, called the activist “like a son” and vowed to pursue the death penalty, a stance echoed by Cox.
“This was a heinous assassination,” Trump said, declining to view circulating graphic videos of the incident. “Charlie moved the youth vote like no one else.”

Despite his family’s Republican ties—Robinson once dressed as Trump for Halloween—authorities described him as increasingly isolated, with a fascination for firearms.
The FBI had offered a $100,000 reward for tips leading to his arrest, which was claimed by the family member who alerted authorities late Thursday.
The killing has ignited fierce debate over campus security and political polarization. Attendees, including local resident Henry Dells, lamented the event’s lax protections: “I had a weird feeling he was vulnerable.”

Vice President JD Vance, a Kirk protégé, escorted the activist’s casket back to Phoenix aboard Air Force Two, joined by Kirk’s grieving family.
