At a Special Meeting on August 26, the Bayonne City Council passed three resolutions that will enable construction of a new section of Bayonne’s aqueduct. That aqueduct runs from a gatehouse in North Arlington, through Kearny, under the Hackensack River, through Jersey City, and, finally, down to Bayonne. The portion of the aqueduct running beneath the Hackensack River from Kearny to Jersey City was the subject of the August 26 resolutions. This section is being replaced due to its age and the possibility of future leaks. The State of New Jersey has mandated that the aqueduct construction project must be completed by June 30, 2028.
Two of the Council resolutions approved temporary water pipeline construction easement agreements. These easements allow temporary access to private properties in Jersey City and Kearny, so that aqueduct construction can be completed. The Council also approved a third resolution that will allow the Bayonne water-sewer utility permanent access to the completed aqueduct on property owned by Hugo Neu Development, LLC in Kearny. These easement agreements were subject to negotiation between the City and two private entities.
