Additional Charges Filed Following Fatal Collision in Jersey City

Jersey City, October 5, 2023 – The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, led by Prosecutor Esther Suarez, has announced additional charges against the driver involved in a tragic collision that took place on Route 139 in Jersey City on September 1, 2023.

Gabriel Melo, 22, of Newark, initially faced charges of Death by Auto following the accident. He has now been additionally charged with Aggravated Manslaughter, Reckless Manslaughter, and Assault by Auto Resulting in Bodily Injury. Melo was arrested at the Hudson County Correctional Facility where he was already detained due to initial charges related to the collision.

The early morning accident involved a 2018 Audi and a tractor-trailer. The Audi, found overturned with significant damage, had three occupants. All were rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center. Sadly, one of the passengers, Daniella Rosario, 21, of Bloomfield, succumbed to her injuries shortly after the accident. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 53-year-old male, remained unharmed and stayed at the scene.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit, in collaboration with the Jersey City Police Department, continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

Prosecutor Suarez expressed her gratitude to the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Jersey City Police Department for their diligent work on this case. She emphasized that the charges against Melo are accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
