Arson Task Force Investigating Friday’s Double Fatal Fire In Kearny

A tragic incident took place early Friday morning in Kearny, as fire ripped through a Hamilton Avenue residence, resulting in the death of two individuals.  According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Kearny Fire Department are investigating the double fatal fire.

Just past 12 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2024, the Kearny Fire Department was notified of a fire at 56 Hamilton Avenue.  When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they found heavy fire coming from a single residence.  As firefighter were going through suppression activities, two victims were located within the structure with serious injuries. 61-tear old Martin Wilson was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead at approximately 1:20 a.m.  58-year old Mary Beth Guenther was transported to Clara Maas Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 12 p.m.

According to a press release from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, “The preliminary investigation determined the fire originated in the basement of the structure. The cause has not been determined, however, foul play is not suspected at this time. This matter is being investigated by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force with assistance by the Kearny Fire Department and the Kearny Police Department.”
