A physician with a long history of formerly serving the Bayonne community has permanently lost his license to practice medicine. Attorney General Matthew Platkin and the Division of Consumer Affairs have announced that the State Board of Medical Examiners has permanently revoked the license of John R. McGee, M.D., a physician formerly licensed to practice medicine and surgery in the State of New Jersey.
The action was formalized in a Final Consent Order filed on September 9th. It includes allegations that Dr. McGee engaged in multiple forms of professional misconduct, including maintaining an inappropriate relationship with a patient, failing to meet the standard of care in his operation of medical spas, improperly prescribing controlled dangerous substances (CDS) using other physicians’ prescription pads, and indiscriminately prescribing and compounding medications such as semaglutide, which is used as a weight management drug.
This is not the first instance of medical misconduct by Dr. McGee, as his medical license was revoked in California earlier this year after he was found to have misrepresented the status of his New Jersey license on sworn statements submitted to that state’s medical board. The New Jersey Board determined that this out-of-state disciplinary action, combined with the serious allegations of misconduct in New Jersey, provided grounds for the permanent revocation of his license to practice medicine and surgery in the State of New Jersey.
Nine years ago Dr. McGee was disciplined by the Board. In August 2016 the Board imposed a five-year suspension, including one year of active suspension, on Dr. McGee’s license to practice medicine and surgery in New Jersey, and a permanent cease and desist from prescribing human growth hormone and controlled dangerous substances.
Under the terms of the Final Consent Order, Dr. McGee has surrendered his license with prejudice and is permanently barred from reapplying for licensure in New Jersey.
According to a press release from the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, “He must immediately cease all patient contact, is prohibited from charging or receiving fees for medical services rendered by others in New Jersey, and is required to notify patients how to access to their medical records. Dr. McGee is also barred from managing, supervising, or otherwise influencing the practice of medicine in the state.”
Attorney General Platkin stated, “New Jerseyans deserve to know that their healthcare providers meet the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. This permanent revocation ensures that this physician can no longer endanger patients or compromise public trust in the medical profession.”
“The Board’s decision reflects its ongoing commitment to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of patients,” said Elizabeth Harris, Acting Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs. “Physicians who engage in serious misconduct or disregard the rules governing medical practice will be held accountable.”
Investigators with the Enforcement Bureau within the Division of Consumer Affairs conducted the investigation.
