Bayonne Little Leaguers Down, But Not Out

UPDATE:  Bayonne will face Ohio, which defeated Texas 6-1 in Monday’s elimination game, on Tuesday night.

Reality hit the Bayonne 12 and under Little League team hard on Sunday afternoon in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, handing the squad its first loss in the double elimination tournament.  Davenport, Iowa, the Midwest Region champions, shut out Bayonne by a score of 6-0.

To put it mildly, the Bayonne offense, the Metro Region champions, could not muster anything against Davenport’s pitcher, Anthony Johnson Jr., who struck out 15 batters and topped off his incredible performance by hitting a three-run homer to put the game away for Iowa.

Bayonne won its previous game against West Chester, Pennsylvania, the Mid-Atlantic Region champions before falling to Iowa.

Bayonne now must play in Tuesday’s elimination game where it’s win or go home.  If Bayonne can defeat the winner of this afternoon’s game between Boerne, Texas, the Southwest Region champion and Hamilton, Ohio, the Great Lakes Region champion, then their dream of becoming Little League World Series champion will remain alive.

Monday’s game will be on ESPN beginning at 3 pm.  Bayonne’s elimination game on Tuesday will be on ESPN beginning at 7 pm.
