Bayonne Police Department Holds Ceremony for Two Lieutenants and One New Officer – Press Release

 Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Bayonne Police Department held a promotional ceremony for two lieutenants and one new police officer on Thursday, March 9, in the City Council Chambers.

After ten years as Sergeants, Joseph Spiers and Darren Burke were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.  Diego Casais, a new recruit, was appointed to the department with the rank of Police Officer. 

Lieutenant Spiers joined the Bayonne Police Department in 1994.  During his 23 years with the department, he has been assigned to the Patrol Division, and the Narcotics Unit, where he is serving currently as Unit Supervisor.  Lieutenant Spiers is the recipient of the Valor Award, seven Commendations, thirty-nine Excellent Police Service Awards, three meritorious Police Service Awards, and two Unit Citations.  He also received a Valor Award from the Jersey City Police Department.  He is a graduate of Marist High School, and attended Jersey City State College, where he majored in Criminal Justice.  Lieutenant Spiers was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on May 30, 2007.  He was born to the late Susan Spiers, who worked for the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an Investigator.  He has two children, Ronan Spiers and Ireland Spiers.  He is married to the former Jessica Morello.

Lieutenant Darren Burke joined the Bayonne Police Department in 1995.  During his 22 years with the department, he has been assigned to the Patrol Division, Community Policing Unit, Detective Bureau, Juvenile Aid Bureau, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Squad, and, most recently, the Licensing and Permits Unit.  Lieutenant Burke was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on May 30, 2007.  He is the recipient of two Commendations and sixteen Excellent Police Service Awards.  He is a graduate of Bayonne High School and attended St. Peter’s College, where he majored in Biology.  A lifelong resident of Bayonne, Lieutenant Burke is the son of the late Carol and John Burke.  He is married to the former Lisa Rotlo.  They have four children: Amanda Ricardi, John Anthony Burke, Nino Burke, and Darren Burke, Jr.

Police Officer Diego Casais is a graduate of the Passaic County Police Academy.  A lifelong resident of Bayonne and a graduate of Bayonne High School, he attended Hudson County Community College before entering the workforce.  He has worked in Bayonne for the last thirteen years at New York Community Bank and International Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT).  Police Officer Casais is the son of Cruces and the late Perfecto Casais.  He will be assigned to the Patrol Division, and will also be enrolled in the department’s Field Training Officer Program for the next several months until completion. 

City Clerk Robert F. Sloan administered the oaths of office to all three members of the Police Department.  Mayor Davis, Public Safety Director Robert Kubert, Police Chief Drew Niekrasz, and the City Council Members all spoke at the ceremony.  Father John Fencik, the Police Chaplain, offered the invocation and the benediction.  The Police Department Honor Guard and the Bayonne Police Pipes and Drums led the entrance procession.  Police Officer Doaa Salama led the Pledge of Allegiance.
