Bayonne Honors Heroes: Tunnel to Towers Run Set for September 24
BAYONNE – The city of Bayonne is gearing up to pay tribute to the heroes of 9/11 and local law enforcement officers with the annual Tunnel to Towers Run, scheduled for September 24, 2023.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, established in memory of Firefighter Stephen Siller, has been at the forefront of commemorating the brave souls who laid down their lives on September 11, 2001. On that fateful day, Siller, equipped with sixty pounds of gear, made a heroic dash through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center, where he, along with 342 other firefighters, tragically lost their lives.
Initially set up to support the families affected by the 9/11 attacks, the foundation has since broadened its horizons. Today, it stands as a beacon of hope for the survivors of military service members and first responders who face life-altering injuries or make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
In a touching gesture of solidarity, the foundation took on the mortgage of Jersey City detective and former Bayonne resident, Joseph Seals, after his untimely death in 2019.
2019 wasn’t the only year the foundation made headlines. In 2021, Bayonne proudly welcomed Frank Siller, Stephen’s brother, as he embarked on a walk across America, marking his journey through Bayonne en route to Staten Island.
This year’s run promises to be special. Bayonne Fire Captain Michael Pelliccio, who has previously led teams that raised an impressive $60,000 for the foundation, will be participating. Moreover, a joint team from the Bayonne Police and Fire Departments is set to run in honor of four esteemed officers with ties to Bayonne: NJ Transit Police Officer Brendan Burke, Newark Police Captain Richard Weber, Bayonne Police Captain Paul Jamolawicz, and Bayonne Police Sergeant Robert Skalski. Their dedication to their communities remains unmatched, and this run seeks to honor their memories and service.
For those looking to support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the heroes it represents, donations are welcome. Additionally, sponsorships for teams are available. To show your support for the Bayonne Police and Fire Team in the upcoming run, sign up online at https://runsignup.com/bayonnepdfd.
