Anti-ICE protestors outside of the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack over the past several days has resulted in numerous arrests. According to the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, the majority of the protestors who demonstrated against the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement policy detaining immigrants do not live in New Jersey or Bergen County.
Tensions boiled over Saturday following a month of protests in solidarity with the detainees, several of whom have been on a hunger strike. The detainees stopped eating meals in order to bring attention to several issues. They, along with anti-ICE advocates, described unsafe conditions at the jail — saying that the jail is dirty, rat-infested, lacks clean water and is ill-equipped to keep detainees safe during the coronavirus pandemic.
