A boil water advisory has been issued by Veolia Water for a section of Hoboken on the west side of the city after a contractor hit a 10 inch water main on Monday afternoon, causing pressure to drop below safe levels.  The localized advisory effects the area between 6th & 10th Streets from Adams Street to Marshall Drive.

3rd Ward Councilman Michael Russo issued the following statement:  “Another water problem in Hoboken! At approximately 4:30pm yesterday, a contractor operating on private property struck a Veolia water line, causing significant flooding near the intersection of 7th and Madison Streets and subsequent closure of an entire city block. This comes on the heels of last week’s water main break, which caused a sinkhole to open up on Newark Avenue. Our residents’ minds are boggled and their concerns are completely valid; they deserve better than constant disruptions.”

Russo went on to say, “As we know from previous incidents over the years, the City has the capacity to bring suit and/or levy significant fines against contractors who interfere with Hoboken’s water supply, and I urge Mayor Bhalla to expedite that process. I’m actively in touch with our neighbors, and anyone who has been affected by the damage should reach out to me immediately at (201) 401-9687.”

As of 8:30 this morning, Tuesday, April 16th, there is no timetable for when repairs will be completed and the boil water advisory will be lifted.

Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes or using your dishwasher.  It does need to be boiled for at least one minute for:

  • washing dishes
  • drinking
  • cooking
  • baking
  • making ice cubes
  • taking medication
  • brushing teeth
  • washing food
  • mixing baby formula or food
  • mixing juices or drinks
  • feeding pets, and
  • all other consumption
