North Bergen Furniture Store goes up in Flames

Fire destroyed a one-story 75′ x 200′ furniture store at Kennedy Blvd. and 13th Street on Dec. 21, sending some 100 firefighters to the scene.  The fire started in the rear of the building on the 13th Street side (this photo), around 11 am, and rapidly extended to the front store area, facing Kennedy Blvd.

Chief of Department Frank Montagne said that within 15 to 20 minutes, the entire building was fully involved, and the radiant heat could be felt on the opposite side of the wide boulevard.

Ladder 1’s apparatus had to be moved from the front of the building after the rapid moving flames vented out of the Kennedy Blvd. display windows, threatening the apparatus.  It did suffer some radiant heat damage.

About half a dozen people were in the building when the fire started and were safely evacuated.  Several firefighters were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Five alarms were sounded, bringing in mutual aid fire companies from Jersey City and Kearny to the scene. Four hours after the fire was reported, it was declared under control by the incident commander, Deputy Chief Charles Thomas.   (story and photos by Ron Jeffers)
