“Broadway Love” helps bring High Tech High School students closer to Scotland

The Broadway Stars Kerry Butler (Catch Me If You Can, Xanadu, Hairspray), Christine Pedi (Chicago, Newsical), James Carpinello (Rock of Ages, Saturday Night Fever), Telly Leung (Gospel, Rent, Glee), Anastasia McCleskey (Violet, Book of Mormon, Priscilla), Kate Loprest (First Date, Wonderland), Clarke Thorell (Annie, Hairspray), Michael Cusumano (Chicago, American in Paris) and more, performed in “Broadway Love” at High Tech High School. The show was directed by Alex Perez (Ultimate Drag Off, De La Guarda) and the Musical Direction was done by Charles Santoro (Silence the Musical, Disenchanted).

The special benefit concert was held in an effort to raise money so that the students can perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland this summer, through AHSTF (American High School Theatre Festival). The 25 students involved in this arts program were selected to perform, but will have to raise funds to cover all their expenses. They decided to turn to the community and Broadway fans for help.

“We have upwards of $150,000 to raise for the entire trip for 23 students and 2 chaperones,” director Alex Perez stated.

The Broadway stars performed some signature songs and songs of love just in time for Valentine’s Day in their intimate 140 seat Black Box Theatre with a live band.

The students will continue to raise money. “We have our winter show, our spring show and a gofundme page where people from the community can donate,” Alex said.
