Cop shoots armed man in Bayonne

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is looking into details of a domestic violence situation Friday night in Bayonne that escalated to a police involved shooting of an armed man.

Bayonne Police encountered the 51-year-old man on East 25th Street acting aggressive.

The man pursued the responding officer with a knife.

Despite numerous commands to drop his weapon, the man continued to threaten the officer with the knife, prompting the cop to discharge his service weapon.

The man, Rudy Vera of Bayonne, was hit in the torso and an extremity and treated at the scene. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, a female victim found Vera in her apartment in violation of a restraining order.

The victim immediately left her home and was pursued by Vera, who threatened her with a screwdriver and a knife.

Vera is charged with armed burglary, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon; violation of a restraining order; aggravated assault – attempt to cause bodily injury with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault – attempt to cause serious bodily injury; aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

The officer was taken to Bayonne Medical Center for evaluation.

The Prosecutor’s Office Internal Affairs Unit has taken over the investigation from the Bayonne Police Department.
