Performances by County Prep Students and Local Guest Artists

JERSEY CITY, NJ – County Prep High School in Jersey City is gearing up to host the 17th Annual Dance Concert, Memory in Motion starting today Thursday May 10th and Friday May 11 at 7pm (Tickets available via:

The show is the culminating event of County Prep’s Choreographers in Residence Program (CHIRP). A groundbreaking partnership between County Prep’s dance program and the local professional dance community. The partnership consists of an exchange through which professional choreographers, chosen by application, have the opportunity to rehearse and perform in County Prep’s theater, and in turn spend the semester teaching and mentoring students. The program has hosted talents such as Katelyn Halpern & Dancers and Driggs Productions/Khadija Ahmaddiya.

“The partnership developed between students and mentors through CHIRP is of immense value,” said Hudson County Schools of Technology Superintendent Frank Gargiulo. “We are always looking for ways to give our students the best chance to succeed in their respective academies and areas of focus. CHIRP is no exception to this, I commend the work done by administrators, teachers, students and mentors to make this a successful program.”

For this year’s Annual Dance Concert, County Prep Students interviewed family members about different times in their lives, and then choreographed dances based on those memories.  The show investigates the passing of time as told through modern and contemporary dance.

“One of my favorite things about the County Prep dance program is that we are working in true artistic collaboration,” said County Prep High School Director of Dance/Performing Arts Heather Warfel Sandler. “I like to refer to our classroom as a laboratory, our students bring their own ideas and we all participate in the creative process. Now, through the CHIRP program, professional choreographers are integrated into that collaboration. The opportunity for our students to sit and discuss their work with teachers and mentors is invaluable in shaping their sense of creative confidence.
