Darius Evans Sentenced: 16 Years for Taking Tyrone Haskins’ Life

JERSEY CITY, NJ – On September 19, 2024, Darius Evans, aged 49, was sentenced to 16 years in New Jersey State Prison following his guilty plea to one count of Aggravated Manslaughter. The crime, which occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2021, resulted in the death of Tyrone Haskins, 39, from Jersey City.

The incident took place around 2:45 a.m. near 333 Ocean Avenue, where responding officers discovered Haskins with a fatal stab wound to his torso. Despite immediate medical attention, Haskins was pronounced dead at Jersey City Medical Center at approximately 3:20 a.m.

Darius Evans’s sentencing was presided over by the Honorable John A. Young. Under the terms of his plea, Evans must serve 85% of his sentence before he becomes eligible for parole, in accordance with New Jersey’s No Early Release Act.

Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Gilbert represented the State during the sentencing phase. Evans’s guilty plea on May 21, 2024, facilitated a resolution to the case without going to trial, acknowledging his role in Haskins’s untimely death.
