New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has signed legislation sponsored and supported by Hudson County’s legislative delegation which allows early voting in non-partisan, May municipal elections to seven days.
In a statement the Governor said, “This bill will allow municipalities to expand early voting and ensure the people of our state have their voices heard at the local level, where these decisions will shape our neighborhoods, our schools, and our daily lives.” The measure was sponsored by Assemblymen Larry Wainstein, Gabriel Rodriguez (both D-33), and Assemblywoman Tennille McCoy (D-14). The identical bill in the Senate was sponsored by Raj Mukherji (D-32) and Brian Stack (D-33).
The bills passed the Assembly 66-8, while the Senate tally was 29-9.
The new law allows municipalities which hold nonpartisan elections in the month of May to start early voting eight days before Election Day. This extends the early voting window by four days. Early voting will still end two days before the election.
