Emergency responders rushed the woman to safety, along with her two cats from the third floor apartment. They weren’t injured.
Chief William Chiappane says the fire started in the living room about 9:30 pm and was contained to that apartment. The cause is under investigation.
”There’s fire damage to the fire department. We have a little bit of damage to the floor above and then water damage in the T line of the building and obviously there’s water in the lobby. All that’s gonna have to get cleaned up before they let the residents in,” he says.
Fort Lee’s Office of Emergency Management helped the 20 displaced families who needed emergency shelter.
Officials will decide when the building is safe to return. Crews from Leonia and Edgewater also responded.
