On September 27th, 2019, at approximately 1:49AM, members of the North Bergen Police Department responded to the area of 74th Street and Bergenline Avenue on a report of an assault with a knife. Upon arrival, officers on scene made contact with three male victims who were patrons of a bar/restaurant, America Central Restaurant, located at 7328 Bergenline Avenue, North Bergen. The victims are described as:
22 year old Hispanic male out of Palisades Park, NJ – swelling under his left eye
21 year old Hispanic male out of Englewood, NJ – laceration to the back of his head (struck with a belt buckle)
28 year old Hispanic male (unknown residence due to the fact that the victim was transported to the hospital for his injuries) – a laceration to his abdomen (laceration from a knife)
Victims stated that they were in the restaurant and seated at a table behind the main actor of this incident. The actor was allegedly intoxicated and caused a disturbance in the restaurant. The actor was told to leave the establishment and for some unknown reason became angry with the victims. When the actor was removed, he waited outside of the establishment for the victims to exit the restaurant, which was approximately 15 minutes later. The actor followed the victims for a short distance on foot and attacked the victims using a knife.
During the attack, a Ford 150 Pickup Truck was driving by and the occupants of the vehicle witnessed the attack. Through investigation, it is believed that one of the occupants of the truck, personally knows the actor. The pickup truck stopped and the occupants exited the vehicle and engaged in a street fight with the actor against the victims.
The actor and occupants of the truck then fled in the pickup shortly thereafter. One of the victims was able to record the truck with his cell phone. A police BOLO or Be On the Look Out was broadcast with the vehicle’s information. The West New York Police Department notified this agency stating that they had located the suspect’s vehicle on Kennedy Boulevard near 51st Street.
The vehicle and two occupants were briefly detained while two victims of the incident were transported to the actors’ location for what is called a police “Show Up” to possible identify the actors. The third victim was transported to an area hospital for his injuries. The remaining two victims were able to positively identify the actors as the individuals that exited the truck and attacked them. A consent to search of the pickup truck revealed two knives, a bloody shirt and a leather belt with blood spatter.
The driver of the pick up truck is described as a 27 year old Hispanic male out of North Bergen. The passenger is described as a 46 year old Hispanic male, out of Guttenberg. Investigation revealed that the driver drove home a third actor described as a Hispanic male, 20 years old out of Union City. The fourth actor (main actor that is believed to have assaulted the victims with a knife) later turned himself in at police headquarters. He is described as a Hispanic male, 31 years old out of Guttenberg.
All four actors were placed under arrest and they faced numerous charges which included Aggravated Assault, Weapons Possession Offenses, Hindering Apprehension and driving while intoxicated. The charges were placed on multiple warrants and the actors were sent to the Hudson Count Jail for incarceration.
The victim that was transported to the hospital sustained a moderate amount of blood loss but is receiving treatment for his injuries and is in stable condition.
