He’s being hailed as a hero but it’s nothing new to Officer Carlos Pina, of the Union City Police Department.
Pina was on patrol and half a block away when he smelled the smoke.
He got out of his car and saw the smoke billowing out of 515 Seventh Street, kicked into high gear and was on it, according to Police Chief Richard Molinari.
“Great communication, great police work — working hand-in-hand with the community really, really helped to minimize the impact,” Molinari says.
Two families were without homes after the blaze, according to officials– but they have their lives, thanks to Pina.
It originated on the first floor of 507 Seventh St., one of several closely spaced homes between West Street and Bergenline Avenue.
The fire broke out at 11 a.m. and was under control within 45 minutes.
Officials called it a two-alarm fire because of the close proximity to the next building,
separated only by an alleyway.
Good job to our men in blue especially to Carlos Pina who took action quick.
