Hoboken Man Arrested with Possession of a Knife Tells Cops He Had Covid-19 Because He “Smelled the Virus in his Stool”

Arrestee: John Vogel 60 y/o Male from Hoboken, NJ

Arrest Location: 423 Willow Ave Hoboken, NJ 07030

Arrest Date & Time: 04/18/20 at 1:09 PM

Offenses: Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of Weapon and Prohibited Weapons and Device

Officers Involved: Officer Wilfredo Gomez, Officer Nathaniel Arocho, and Officer Samuel Flores

On Saturday, April 18, 2020, at about 12:59 PM, Officer Wilfredo Gomez, Officer Nathaniel Arocho, and Officer Samuel Flores responded to the area of 4th and Willow Avenue on a reported male brandishing a large knife towards another male. When Officers arrived, they were approached by the caller. The caller stated he overheard two males arguing and one of the men had a large knife in his hand.  The caller then pointed out the male that was holding the knife. That male was standing in the area of 423 Willow Avenue. Officers approached the male who was identified as John Vogel. Offices approached Vogel and conducted an investigation. Vogel was found to be in possession of two knives. One knife was 14 inches and the other 8 inches. Vogel was also in possession of Pepper Spray Gel 50 grams.

While Vogel was being placed under arrest he stated he was COVID-19 positive, stating he (Vogel) smelled the virus in his stool, so he went to the hospital. Vogel stated the hospital mentioned to him that he could be positive. Vogel did not know if he was tested. All officers on scene were wearing their Personal Protection Equipment at the time of contact with Vogel. Vogel was transported to headquarters.

At headquarters, Vogel was seen by an ambulance and he refused any further medical treatment. Vogel neither displayed nor stated he had any signs of symptoms of the virus at the time of the arrest. He was found to have an identification card from Hawaii, but is currently residing in Hoboken.

The second male involved in the argument was not found. Vogel was charged with Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of Weapon and Prohibited Weapons and Device. Vogel’s charges were placed on a Warrant. Vogel was found to have a Hudson County Superior Court warrant for his arrest.

Vogel was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility after being processed.

 

Above defendant is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
