Hoboken Police arrested four men for trying to buy gift cards at the Madison Street ShopRite with fake $10, $20 and $100 bills.

The men were charged with forgery.

According to officers, they’ve seen a recent uptick in local businesses reporting bogus money or stolen credit cards being passed.

A ShopRite employee told the store manager Shaquan McPherson of Jersey City attempted to buy $2,000 worth of gift cards.

A police officer stopped the 19-year-old on 5th and Monroe Street, where McPherson said he didn’t do anything wrong and was only buying two gift cards of $40.

Then McPherson showed the officer three $10 bills and three $20 bills. The $20s had the same serial number.  The other bills had no tech stripe and no security stripe.

Police say another eight $100s in Mcpherson’s pocket were also fake, along with a $20 bill, totaling $910 in counterfeit cash.

Hoboken Police charged McPherson with forgery and possession of CDS (capsule of oxycodeine) without a prescription.

Willie Harris, 45, of the Bronx was charged with forgery.

Cashmere Davis, 20, of the Bronx was charged with forgery.

Davaughn Hopson, 27, of Jersey City was charged with forgery.
