Hudson County Acting Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced that on September 18, 2025, a jury convicted Apparao Sunkara, a 72-year-old teacher from Hicksville, New York, of multiple sex crimes involving a 12-year-old female student at Infinity Institute in Jersey City. The crimes occurred between September 2019 and January 2020.
Sunkara was found guilty of second-degree Sexual Assault by Contact, second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and second-degree Official Misconduct. The verdict was delivered before Judge Nesle Rodriguez after a multi-week trial.
Sentencing is set for December 12, 2025, with Sunkara facing Megan’s Law registration and lifelong parole supervision. Assistant Prosecutor Celia Morrison represented the State.
