Jalen Culver Convicted for 2021 Homicide of Teen Zaimeir Bell

Jersey City, NJ – In a significant development in a case that has captured the attention of Hudson County, a jury has convicted 22-year-old Jalen Culver for the 2021 shooting death of 17-year-old Zaimeir Bell. The verdict, delivered on December 5, 2023, by the Honorable John A. Young, J.S.C., concluded a four-day trial that highlighted the tragic events of March 21, 2021.

Culver, a Newark resident, faced multiple charges, including Manslaughter (N.J.S.A. 2C:11-4b(1)), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4A(1)), and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5B(1)). However, he was acquitted of Aggravated Manslaughter (N.J.S.A. 2C:11-4a(1)). Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Andrew Baginski represented the State in this matter.

The incident, which occurred near Martin Luther King Drive and Woodlawn Avenue in Jersey City, was responded to by the Jersey City Police Department following reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered Bell with gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite being rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, Bell was pronounced dead at approximately 6:10 p.m.

The community has closely followed the case, seeking justice for the untimely death of Bell. The conviction of Culver brings a measure of closure to a case that has left lasting impacts on the Jersey City community.
