Jersey City Man Armed with a Hammer Arrested for Robbery in Hoboken

Arrest Date and Time: 07/16/20 at about 2:12 AM

Offenses: Robbery, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement Officer

Officer Involved: P.O. Mark Mullins, P.O. Matthew Isler, and P.O. Brandon Fitzgibbons

 

At about 2:12 AM, on July 16, 2020, Officer Mathew Isler and Officer Mark Mullins were dispatched to the area of 89 Washington Street on a report of a male holding a “Heavy Weapon”. When the officers arrived, they were directed to the suspect. They observed a male holding a large hammer in his right hand. The male was ordered to drop the hammer and to take a seat on the ground. The male was identified as Osvaldo Martinez 31 y/o Male from Jersey City, NJ. He complied with the officer’s orders and the hammer was secured. While on scene, the investigation revealed the following:

According to the victim, Martinez approached the victim inside a food establishment and demanded that victim turn over his keys for his motor vehicle. The victim stated he was threatened with bodily harm if he refused. The victim denied owning a car and as a result Martinez raised a large hammer over his head. The victim reported that Martinez never swung or struck the victim with the hammer. The investigation led to the arrest of  Martinez and charging him with Robbery, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. While Martinez was being processed for the listed charges, he assaulted Officer Mark Mullins and Officer Brandon Fitzgibbons. While being fingerprinted and photographed, Martinez pushed Officer Mark Mullins causing Officer Mullins to scrape his right elbow on a wall. Officer Mullins, Officer Isler and Officer Fitzgibbons had to regain control of Martinez. As a result, Officer Fitzgibbons injured his right thumb.  Both officers were treated for their injuries and returned back to full duty without restrictions. Martinez was additionally charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer. All charges were placed on a warrant. Martinez also had a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in Hoboken Municipal Court. Martinez was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

 

Defendant is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
