Jersey City man charged with eluding related to Police-involved shooting in Paterson NJ

Jersey City resident Terrance Nelson (26) was arrested without incident in Irvington and charged on a summons by the Paterson Police Department on January 31, 2018, with one count of third degree Eluding a third degree charge carries a maximum term of five (5) years in New Jersey State Prison, according to Passaic County Prosecutor.

The incident occurred in the area of Cianci and Market Streets in the City of Paterson around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. An on-duty Paterson Police Officer approached Mr. Nelson as part of an investigation in progress. Mr. Nelson allegedly entered a vehicle and pulled away while refusing police commands to stop. During the encounter, one round was discharged from the officer’s department-issued handgun. A police pursuit then ensued through Paterson and into Irvington where Mr. Nelson eventually brought the vehicle to a stop. No injuries were sustained by the police or civilians. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Shooting Response Team was activated and is handling the investigation pursuant to Attorney General Directives.

The investigation in this matter, including the use of force by police, remains ongoing. At this time, further information will not be released so as not to jeopardize the safety of persons involved or to jeopardize the investigation in progress.
