Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has announced that a 71-year old, Jersey City resident has been arrested by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and charged with a fatal hit-and-run accident on October 20, 2023. The arrest of Mohammad Ali took place on Friday, January 26, 2024.
Siarez says Jersey City Police were notified at 6:45 pm on October 20 that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle near Fairview and Monticello Avenues. When police arrived, they found 85-year old, Jersey City resident Mumtaz Chaudhry, dead at the scene, near Fairmount and Summit Avenues.
Ali is charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Collision Resulting in Death, a second degree crime, and Endangering an Injured Victim, a third degree crime.
Ali is tentatively scheduled to have his first court appearance on Tuesday, February 13. Until then, the charges against Ali are just accusations.
