Jersey City Substitute Teacher Arrested on Sex Crime Charges

A Jersey City substitute teacher has been arrested and charged with alleged sex crimes involving two students from Public School 34 on Kennedy Boulevard. The incidents reportedly took place on May 15, 2023.

The accused, Fayez Yassa, 64, of Jersey City, faces two counts of Sexual Assault by Contact and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Both charges are considered second-degree crimes under New Jersey law.

The arrest, which took place on Thursday, October 12, 2023, was a collaborative effort between the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit (SVU), the Jersey City Police Department, and Jersey City Public Schools. Yassa was apprehended at his home and has been taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. Following the allegations and subsequent arrest, he has been dismissed from his teaching position.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez commended the Special Victims Unit for their diligent work in the investigation and arrest. She also extended gratitude to the Jersey City Police Department and Jersey City Public Schools for their assistance.
