Jersey City To Hold 7th Annual Great Citywide Cleanup

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, in partnership with the Department of Public Works and the Office of Cultural Affairs, invites residents to take part in the 7th Annual Great Jersey City Cleanup.   The event will be taking place on Saturday, May 31, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. across all six wards.

Thousands of volunteers from across Jersey City – including residents, community leaders, elected officials, schools, and local organizations – will roll up their sleeves to clean parks, remove litter and debris from streets and sidewalks, and beautify public spaces through planting and maintenance activities.

In a statement the Mayor said, “Each year, the Great Jersey City Cleanup brings together people of all backgrounds with one shared goal: to uplift our neighborhoods and foster pride in our city.  The positive impact extends far beyond the day itself, as it strengthens community bonds and inspires long-term environmental stewardship.”

Since it first began in 2016, the citywide initiative has engaged nearly 6,000 volunteers, collecting more than 24.2 tons of garbage and recyclables while promoting civic responsibility and cleaner, safer streets.

John Lynch, Director of Administrative Services for the city’s DPW and lead organizer of the event, added:  “This initiative proves what’s possible when city government and residents work together. Every broom swept, bag filled, and flower planted brings us closer to the kind of city we all deserve – clean, vibrant, and welcoming.”

The Cleanup is being held at the locations in all six wards:

• Ward A: Bayside Park
• Ward B: Lincoln Park
• Ward C: Journal Square Plaza
• Ward D: Riverview Park
• Ward E: Hamilton Park
• Ward F: Arlington Park

In a press release, Omni Aviv, Director of Community Engagement and Volunteerism, emphasized:  “This isn’t just a one-day event. It’s a citywide movement for year-round cleanliness and pride.  We encourage everyone to join us and help make a visible difference.”

The city says that volunteers of all ages and experience levels are welcome.  Supplies such as gloves and trash bags will be provided at each location. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own brooms, rakes, or litter grabbers, as supplies may be limited.
