Judge Sentences Jersey City Man to 25 Years For 2023 Fatal Shooting Of Wife

A 41-year-old, Jersey City man has been sentenced to 25 years in New Jersey State Prison for the 2023 shooting death of his wife in Jersey City.

According to Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, Lucus Cooper was sentenced by the Honorable Mitzy Galis-Menendez, P.J.S.C. on Thursday, September 25, 2025.  He previously pled guilty to one count of aggravated manslaughter in connection with the death of Temara King, which occurred on January 24, 2023.  Mello says the sentence is subject to the No Early Release Act.

A press release from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office states, “Shortly after 7 a.m. on January 24, 2023, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of shots fired on the third floor of 340 Bergen Avenue.  Upon arrival, responding officers located a female victim – later identified as Temara King, 35, of Jersey City – with apparent gunshot wound(s). She was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where she was pronounced dead just after 8 a.m.”
