KEARNY – Police arrested four men in Kearny on drug charges and open warrants after being stopped for obstructing traffic, officials said.
On Friday, February 6, 2015 at around 4:00 p.m. police saw a 2011 infinity, obstructing traffic near Chestnut and Woodland Ave. After further observation they saw four men in the vehicle and the front seat passenger was ingesting a small brown cigar which he then passed to the back seat passenger, officials said.
When officials approached the vehicle they smelled a strong marijuana odor and saw one of the men drop something out of the vehicle. The occupants were ordered to remove from the vehicle and upon doing so police found three plastic bags of suspected marijuana. Two of the plastic bags were found in the backseat. Inside one of the bags, which was contained in an arm rest of the car, they found five green viles of suspected crack cocaine, officials said.
Nigel Gyamfi, 21, of Newark, was driving the vehicle with a suspended license. He was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, and obstructing traffic.
Michael Cureton, 25, of Newark attempted to discard the suspected marijuana from the vehicle. He was arrested for two active warrants out of Newark, one for $300 and one for $200. He was also charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jamal Wright, 27, of East Orange was arrested for a $400 active warrant out of Newark. He was also charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Carnell Wright, 25, of Newark was arrested for an active $500 warrant out of Newark.
