Grewal announced the arrest of Alyssa Elphick (DOB: 08/21/1971; single; and unemployed) of 40 Arlington Avenue, Kearny, NJ on Theft by Deception and Computer Related Theft charges. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert ANZILOTTI.
On Friday, December 16, 2016, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office received information that Ms. Elphick was embezzling money from her former employer’s business, a logistics company based in Hackensack, NJ. An investigation by Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit detectives revealed that Ms. Elphick created fraudulent checks in the business’ name made payable to herself and others which she then used to draw funds from the business’ legitimate bank accounts. The total theft was in excess of $75,000.00. In addition, Ms. Elphick used her access to the business’ accounting software, Quickbooks, to destroy and/or alter the records in an attempt to conceal her theft of the money.
As a result of the investigation, Alyssa Elphick was arrested on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at her home in Kearny, NJ and charged with one count of Theft by Deception, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-4a, a second degree crime; and two counts of Computer Related Theft, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-25c and N.J.S.A. 2C:20-5b, both crimes of the second degree. Ms. Elphick was served with a Complaint-Summons for the aforementioned charges and released. Ms. Elphick is scheduled to appear in Bergen County Central Judicial Processing Court for a first appearance on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.
Prosecutor Grewal states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
