Law Enforcement on High Alert in New Jersey Due to Threats from Former Hamas Leader

On October 13, 2023, police departments across New Jersey heightened their security measures in response to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. This increased vigilance was prompted by a call from a former Hamas leader urging a “global day of Jihad,” which led to anticipated pro-Palestinian protests worldwide.

New Jersey’s Attorney General, Matt Platkin, confirmed that state police would be closely monitoring sensitive areas, including mosques, synagogues, schools, and community centers. Local police departments have also ramped up their patrols. Additionally, houses of worship and community centers are collaborating with law enforcement to ensure safety.

Governor Phil Murphy, after a consultation with the FBI, stated that there are no specific threats directed at the state. He reassured the public, saying, “New Jerseyans can rest assured that law enforcement partners are working around the clock to ensure everyone’s safety.” The public is also encouraged to remain alert, be aware of their surroundings, and promptly report any suspicious activities to the police.
