Fugitive Arrested in Connection with 2023 Murder of Jersey City Woman

Jersey City, NJ – In a significant breakthrough in a case that has gripped the community for over a year, Leiner Miranda Lopez, a 28-year-old from Jersey City, was arrested on September 11, 2024, at Newark Liberty International Airport. Miranda Lopez is accused of the murder of Luz Hernandez, a 33-year-old woman whose body was discovered in a shallow grave in Kearny in February 2023.

Miranda Lopez faced extradition from Bogota, Colombia, where he was initially detained on June 14, 2023, following a U.S. provisional arrest request. His arrest and subsequent extradition were the result of collaborative efforts between the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, the United States Marshals Service, and various U.S. and Colombian law enforcement agencies.

The charges against Miranda Lopez are severe, including Murder, Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution, Failing to Dispose of Human Remains, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Desecrating Human Remains. These charges stem from the tragic death of Hernandez, whose body was found with injuries indicating blunt force trauma to the head and compressions to the neck, classified as an act of domestic violence.

Cesar Santana, 38, also from Jersey City, has been indicted alongside Miranda Lopez in connection with Hernandez’s death. Both men were indicted by a Grand Jury on May 15, 2023.

Prosecutor Esther Suarez commended the efforts of all involved in the arrest, highlighting the international cooperation that led to Miranda Lopez’s extradition. “This arrest marks a significant step towards justice for Luz Hernandez and her family,” Suarez stated. “Our thoughts remain with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

Miranda Lopez is currently detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility, awaiting his first court appearance. The charges against both defendants are accusations at this stage, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This case has not only brought attention to the issues of domestic violence but also to the complexities of international law enforcement cooperation. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community watches closely, hoping for closure and justice for Luz Hernandez.
