Florida Man Ariel Dumit Sentenced to 30 Years for 2021 Jersey City Shooting

Man Receives 30-Year Sentence for 2021 Fatal Shooting in Jersey City

On August 14, 2023, the Honorable Carlo Abad, J.S.C. sentenced Ariel Dumit, aged 38 and hailing from Florida, to 30 years in New Jersey State Prison for the 2021 shooting consequential death of Christian Parra, 34, a resident of Jersey City. This sentencing follows Dumit’s conviction on April 18, 2023, for the murder of Christian Parra.

Dumit was found guilty at trial of Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3A(1)(2), classified as a crime of the first degree. Additionally, he was convicted of Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4A(1), a second-degree crime, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5B(1), also a second-degree crime. He will be required to serve the full 30-year prison term before becoming eligible for parole.

The legal proceedings were led by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutors Erica Bertuzzi and Luisa Florez.

The tragic incident occurred on February 28, 2021, around 8:18 p.m., in the BJ’s Parking Lot at 396 Marin Boulevard in Jersey City. In response to reports of the shooting, Jersey City Police Department officers rushed to the scene and discovered Christian Parra, 34, with a gunshot wound to the torso. Despite being transported to Jersey City Medical Center, Parra was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the torso, with the manner of death classified as a homicide.
