Man takes wife hostage then shoots at Jersey City Police Officers

Jersey City police responded to an apartment on Bergen Avenue near Stegman Street just after 12:40 pm today where a man had taken his wife hostage, threatening to kill her.

The victim’s sister had called police and advised them of the hostage situation and that there were firearms in the apartment.

Upon arrival, responding officers heard the actor state that he wants to be killed by the police.  Additional units responded, including the Emergency Services Unit (ESU) and a department hostage negotiator.  While outside the apartment attempting to talk to the suspect, he fired two rounds through the apartment door at the officers.

No officers were injured and within approximately one hour from the start of the incident, officers gained access to the apartment, rescued the woman and placed the actor under custody without incident. Two weapons were recovered by police from the apartment.

The female victim, who was assaulted by the male actor, was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.  The male actor was also taken to the JCMC.  Charges are pending.
