Cliffside Park Mother of two Children set apartment on fire, prosecutor says

Laila Abualia of Cliffside Park, has been arrested on charges of Aggravated Arson and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor.

On Tuesday, April 18, 2017, emergency units received a report of a residential fire at 238 Day Avenue, Cliffside Park, N.J. The building is an 11-unit multi-family apartment building. First responders discovered the fire inside of Abualia’s apartment. The superintendent of the apartment complex was present at the scene and reported that the residents of Apartment were Abualia as well as their two children ages three and five. The superintendent further said that Laila Abualia had been leaving in a taxi cab as he arrived at the building. However, he was able to stop the taxi and Abualia from leaving the area. Abualia turned over her keys to the superintendent when he questioned her about the fire, then left in the taxi with her children.

The fire was determined to have been started in two separate areas of the apartment, specifically the bedroom and the living room. The cause of the fire was found to be an outside heat source which ignited bedding/furniture in those areas.

As a result of the investigation, Laila Abualia was arrested and charged with 1 count of Aggravated Arson and 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
