Man Arrested in Connection with Fatal Collision in Jersey City

Jersey City, NJ – A 22-year-old Newark resident, Gabriel Melo, has been arrested and charged in relation to a fatal vehicle collision that took place in Jersey City on September 1, 2023. The Hudson County Prosecutor, Esther Suarez, confirmed the arrest in a recent press release.

According to the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit, the incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. near the Routes 1 and 9 North ramp on Route 139 West. Responding officers discovered a 2018 Audi passenger vehicle overturned and severely damaged, along with a tractor-trailer. The Audi had three occupants, all of whom were rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center for medical attention. Tragically, one of the passengers, 21-year-old Daniella Rosario of Bloomfield, was pronounced dead shortly after 2:50 a.m.

Melo faces charges of Death by Auto, as per N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5a. He was taken into custody at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on September 7, 2023. He is currently being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility and is expected to make his first court appearance on September 13, 2023.

The Jersey City Police Department had issued Melo a summons during their initial investigation. Both the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

It’s important to note that all charges against Melo are accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
