A 27-year-old man was shot multiple times outside a Secaucus hotel right off Route 3 early Sunday morning, and police apprehended a Newark man for the crime.

The incident happened outside the La Quinta Inn Hotel on Lighting Way.

Police believe a semi-automatic handgun was used, but it has not been recovered.

The victim underwent surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center and is currently listed in stable condition.

Police investigating the shooting believe this was not a random act of violence because the victim and shooter knew each other prior to the incident.

According to Lieutenant Det. Thomas O’Keeffe, Secaucus Police arrested Michael Stapleton in Newark later Sunday.

Stapleton was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is currently being held in the Hudson County Correctional Facility awaiting a detention hearing.

Chief Kevin Flaherty commended the actions of the members of the Patrol and Detective Divisions for their collaborative efforts, as well as the North Bergen Police Department, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Police Department.

This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information can contact the SPD Detective Division at (201) 330-2052 or detectivedivision@secaucus.net.
