During a ceremony this week at Union City High School, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture honored the Board of Education for its nutritious, farm fresh food program which provides healthy meals to the district’s student population.
The Farm to School Program in New Jersey began about 15 years ago. It provides fresh, organic, and locally grown fruits and vegetables for for school districts, giving students a nutritious meal every day. The Union City Board of Education has partners with Chartwells to participate in the program, ensuring students eat healthy meals when in school.

In addition to receiving a plaque, the NJ Agriculture Department presented a $3,000 grant to the school district which will allow teachers to take some classes to a working farm so students can see that their meals, fruits and vegetables don’t just come from the supermarket.
Union City schools were also recognized for growing their own produce in hydroponic labs, with the food being served at lunchtime and also given to students to take home.
Congratulations to the Union City Board of Education for providing healthy food choices for their students.
