North Bergen man arrested and charged with setting his business on fire

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Hawthorne Police Chief Richard McAuliffe announce that based upon an investigation by the Hawthorne Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Robert Pinero, 34 years old, from North Bergen, New Jersey, was arrested this morning in relation to a fire that was set on August 18, 2017 in the Blimpie’s Sandwich Shop, located at 111 Wagaraw Road, in Hawthorne, New Jersey. At the time of the fire, Mr. Pinero was the owner of that Blimpie’s. Mr. Pinero is charged with two (2) counts of Aggravated Arson, Second Degree; and Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Arson, Second Degree.

On August 18, 2017, at approximately 12:55 a.m., police responded to the area of 111 Wagaraw Road in Hawthorne in response to a report of a fire inside the Blimpie’s, located in a strip mall. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered numerous points of origin for the fire inside of the store as well as what appeared to be an incendiary device. The investigation revealed that Mr. Pinero, and another male entered the store, which was closed at the time, a few minutes before the fire started, and then left the area.

Robert Pinero is scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 1:30 p.m.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
