**THIS STORY CONTAINS NEW INFORMATION Tragedy overnight at a North Bergen Housing Authority building, as a fire has claimed the lives of two senior citizens. According to North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue and township officials, a blaze broke out around 1:30 this morning in the high rise, Cullum Towers on 6299 Grand Avenue.
The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, and the North Bergen Police Department are investigating
According to a report from WABC News, the fire broke out in a single 10th floor apartment unit and claimed the lives of an 88-year old man and a 72-year old woman. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has identified the male victim as Reynaldo Tatis. The woman’s identity is pending the notification of next of kin.
A third resident was taken to a hospital in stable condition, while two police officers were treated for smoke inhalation at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Residents of the Cullum building affected by the fire have been taken to a local motel until the 16-story building is deemed safe to occupy. Reportedly 27 occupants of the building were displaced.
The Red Cross and the NBHA are working to find housing for everyone affected.
