Pedestrian Struck on Tonnelle Avenue, North Bergen

At approximately 8:22 PM last night, the North Bergen Police, and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit responded to Tonnelle Avenue and 48th Street for a pedestrian struck by auto.

Arriving North Bergen Police units found an unconscious male lying in the north bound lanes of Tonnelle Avenue, with severe head injuries.  Alejandro Vedals, 33 of North Bergen, an undocumented alien, regained consciousness and became combative when North Bergen EMS workers were treating him.

He was then transported to the Jersey City Medical Center and was initially listed in critical condition, but has since regained consciousness and has been stabilized. He still remains at the Jersey City Medical Center for observation.

Crash Investigators have pieced together that the victim was crossing Tonnelle Avenue, from the West side to the East side, between cars that were stopped in the South bound lanes. When he entered the North bound lane he was struck by a 2001 Chevy Tahoe. The driver of the Tahoe, Leonardo Rodriguez-Plasnec, 45, of North Bergen, immediately stopped and called 9-1-1 and remained at the scene until police arrived.

Sheriff’s Crash Investigators believe the victim had ear buds in his ears and have confirmed the victim was not in a crosswalk.  The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Crash Investigation Unit and the North Bergen Police Traffic Bureau.”

  1. With all the taxes paid you’d think someone would have built a walkway bridge by now!!! Hello that road is like over loaded and it’s like a millions years old – built when people were able to cross it!! Now you can’t even cross it at 2 in the morning with all the traffic and trucks still flying up and down it.
