Police arrest driver in fatal Kearny hit-and-run

The East Orange man was left for dead after a car smashed into him early Saturday morning, then the pedestrian was struck by a second vehicle in the center of Old Lincoln Highway (Routes 1 & 9) in Kearny.

Kearny Police found Naphtali Dykes’ lifeless body and pronounced the 30-year-old dead at the scene.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, Dykes had just been released from the Hudson County Correctional Center earlier that morning.

Upon further investigation, the Hudson County Regional Fatal Collision Unit identified a male driver who remained at the scene after noticing that he had inadvertently driven over Dykes. The driver is not being charged at this time.

Detectives also discovered the involvement of another suspected vehicle, later located along with its driver, Niraj Patel of Edison.

Twenty-one-year-old Patel was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death.

Suarez credited the Kearny Police Department for assisting with the investigation and Edison Police Department for assisting with the arrest.

The crash is under investigation by the Fatal Collision Unit. Anyone with information should call the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345.
