Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez this morning provided additional information on Saturday night’s fatal shooting of a male in Jersey City, first reported early Sunday morning by Hudson TV.
According to Prosecutor Suarez, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are continuing an investigation involving the shooting death of a 17-year-old male that occurred on Saturday, June 24th. The Jersey City Police Department was notified at approximately 8:02 pm of a shooting in the area of 16th Street and Coles Street.
When Jersey City Police arrived on the scene, they found an injured male, who was later identified as 17-year old, Jersey City resident Isaiah Velasquez, with an apparent gunshot wound to his torso. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead at approximately 8:57 p.m.
According to Suarez, the cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
22-year old Isaiah McCord of Bayonne has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Sunday, June 25th and is being detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating this case.
